Meg & Rebel Heart Life could not be much better than having Rodney Bingenheimer, the “Mayor of Sunset Strip”, dig your band. Just ask The Go-Gos, Duran Duran, No Doubt and a score of other
former, struggling, underground rock bands that were broken wide open by this famed Los Angeles rock jock When Rodney spins, people listen. So, its not surprising that Meg and Rebel Heart, the brainchild of Orange County’s own Megan Bennett, is Rodney’s latest discovery and with the release of their new album this winter on Wild Thyme Records, the rest of the world will get to hear what all the hub-hub is about.
Part of what got Meg and Rebel Heart to this point is remaining level-headed despite all the fanfare, which has enabled Meg Bennett and her band to create timeless, hard-rocking music, dripping with hooks and, above all, worth. While she may be young, Meg’s influences are gleaned from rock ‘n roll history. Songwriters such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Ray Davies and Johnny Cash are important elements in Meg’s lyrics. Bands such as The Beatles, The Kinks, The Doors and The Who figure heavily in her melodies and the her band’s instrumental sound. From Guns ‘N Roses to local favorites, the Living Suns, Meg’s musical influences are both classic and contemporary; Rock Hall of Fame to up-to-the minute cutting edge. The results are evident in Meg’s 10-song full-length release.
Some have described Meg and Rebel Heart as 60s nouveau rock, although the music has a hint of early 1980s punk movement sprinkled over a modern sound that is all its own. If Meg and Rebel Heart were a soundtrack, it would fit into both a gory horror flick or a Hollywood chase scene that Dolby digital would quiver at. So, they have been able to achieve a remarkable crossover appeal from various age groups--- no small task.
Singer/Songwriter Megan Bennett started writing songs at the age of 13. She dreams to one day sit in the clouds of lyrical Heaven with such triple threat (writing, playing and singing) greats as John Lennon and Bob Dylan. Examining the lyrical content of songs such as “Runaway” and “Rebel Heart”, Meg’s personal favorites, you can tell that she is on a path to achieving such status. In addition to Meg’s singing and rhythm guitar playing, the band’s instrumental sound features awesome lead guitar riffs and solos, true, fluid (non thumping!) rock bass guitar and driving drums. Together, the achieved sound is loud, full and, most of all, rocking.
Reanimating the Sunset Strip sound with big guitars, driving rhythms and thoughtful lyrics, Rebel Heart brings together the big sounds of LA Rock. Meg & Rebel Heart will get your fist pounding and give you something to think about!
